From the author of Lightborn, the third book in a Regency- flavored fantasy series of magic and manners.
Magic dies with the mage, or so the Darkborn believe. That's why Lady Telmaine Hearne has been condemned to death for sorcery. She's escaped but is now bound with her mageborn allies for the Borders and war. Meanwhile, her husband, Balthasar, has learned of his family connection to the Shadowborn-and is fighting for survival and sanity as magic turns him against everything he holds dear.

Conclusion to a fine series
By Jolene Dawe
Shadowborn is the last of the Darkborn books, and before I go further I do have to give out a caveat: endings rarely satisfy me, including my own writing. I know this, going into the endings, and I try to not let that have sway with my thoughts on the material. Despite that, this book remains my least favorite of the three.
We caught a glimpse of the Shadowborn -- those folks who live in or beyond the wasteland around the edge of the Sundered Lands, the land where we know the great magic that lead to the Curse took place -- a time or two already. We saw enough in Darkborn to be apprehensive, and we saw enough in Lightborn to be chilled. We see more in Shadowborn and, to be honest, we either see too much or not enough.
This is the least satisfying of all the books, and I think it could have been salvaged by extending the series to four or five books. At this point we have far too many pov characters and too complex of a plot for the length of the book. We're introduced to two different factions of the Shadowborn, and we're made to care, a little, for some of them, who are then swept away and forgotten in the climax of the story. As a reader, I care far more for the folks I've been with since Darkborn, and having one of them plunked down in the court of one of the Shadowborn factions is extremely interesting -- for the two scenes we get, wherein its treated as a device for a history lesson and little more.
I can't help but wonder: was this because of publisher demands and limits? Did the third book suffer because a fourth book wouldn't be supported? By the middle of Lightborn there is enough material and intrigue and complexity for this series to have an epic fantasy scope; at least, each book could have easily supported another one to two hundred words, especially the third, and not have suffered for it. Through the books Alison proves herself to be a talented and skilled storyteller, so I can't help but wonder how much outside influences are at play, here.
Despite my unhappiness with the ending, I still am quite pleased to have discovered this series, and I do think others should read them. The Darkborn are so cool! They have sonar!

A strong finish to a fascinating trilogy
By Elf2060
4 1/2 stars!
"Shadowborn" by Alison Sinclair is the conclusion to her intriguingly textured trilogy featuring cultures which experienced such a sundering that each faction can only exist in conditions that are anathema to the other. The Lightborn use vision and must remain in light whereas the Darkborn must remain in darkness, have no eyesight and use a sense called sonn. They have co-existed peacefully for quite some time when a chain of events results in their hurling accusations at each other for tragedies which have ultimately been orchestrated by a foe they had not anticipated. The Shadowborn have been biding their time and learning each side's particular weaknesses before attacking both physically and magically in retribution for the events from the distant past. Lady Telmaine Hearne is integrally woven into the opposition to these attacks as the magic that she has hidden for so many years is exposed and her inadvertent injury to the leader of the Darkborn garners her an order of execution. Her husband, Balthasar Hearne is himself swept into the fray when he follows the dictates of his vocation and offers aid to a controversial figure but he continues to have a significant role due to his relationship to key figures in the struggle. Baron Ishmael di Studier is unwillingly attracted to Telmaine but has burned out his magic to save her life yet he and the sport mage Tammorn are destined to have invaluable roles to play in the struggle to help both Lightborn and Darkborn survive the attacks by the Shadowborn.
A complex and very creative melding of societies with a rapidly escalating conflict that feeds a bewildering conflagration of events that will cause great upheaval. The action flies fast and furious and the introduction of multiple new players as well as the sudden exposure of several previously murky characters can get a bit overwhelming but the story is still enthralling. Some of the resolutions were a bit less than satisfying and a bit too contrived but that may be due to a personal desire for perfectly happy endings. There is enough wiggle room that another series can (and should) be spun off even as this particular arc has closed so hopefully there will be more tales set in this intriguingly complex world.

strong fantasy
By A Customer
In Minhorne, the Curse insures the Darkborn shun the light and the Lightborn shun the dark so they never mix; at least that was the belief until the twins were born (see Darkborn). Thus Darkborn married mages Lady Telmaine Hearne and Dr. Balthasar end up with the twins, which leads to learning of a third group the Shadowborn manipulating the hostilities between the light and the dark (see Lightborn).
Another "truism" the Darkborn accepts as gospel is that when a mage dies, his or her magic dies too. Thus Darkborn Lady Telmaine Hearne has been sentenced to death for her dabbling with sorcery. She flees for the Borders where war is imminent, but the alliance between the Lightborn and Darkborn is shaky at best as they prepare to fight the Shadowborn. Balthasar mentally struggles with the knowledge of his connection to the insidious diabolical enemy. Lightborn assassin Floria White Hand is at the Borders trying to protect her people's young Prince. At the same time Ishmael di Studier, who has spent a lifetime restraining the Curse, which includes battling the Shadowborn, is unprepared foe what awaits at the Borders.
The third "born" fantasy wraps up the major threads as all the key players converge at the Borders where war is imminent. Extremely complicated yet fast-paced, readers will relish the paths to the final battle as heroes from the previous tales struggle to survive and a terrific spin re the Curse makes for a delightful finish. Although newcomers should read the first two books that set the table for this scrumptious repast, fans will enjoy the latest entry in the Sinclair mythos.
